From [livejournal.com profile] ladybird97: five things important to me that begin with the letter B.

If you'd like to play along, comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Then write five words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation of what the word means to you and why, and pass out letters to others!

Beagles: Specifically one geriatric three-legged beagle named Daisy who is the reigning queen of our household. (And about whom we are very worried right now because she is having back problems and is on bed rest -- my mom has to hand feed her and my dad has to carry her outside to pee. We're all holding our breaths. And hoping for recovery. And trying to reconcile ourselves to the fact that Daisy is >15 years old and that that really is a very good long life for a pup.) More generally, though, beagles are by far my favorite breed of dog (funny how people always seem inclined to the breed they grew up with) and i hope to adopt my own soon.

Books: Well, this one is easy. I don't think i need to explain why books are important (either to me or in general). I love their compactness -- the way so many dimensions fit between the pages. I love that books have both sequence and simultaneity and timelessness. I love that they can act as reference or entertainment or instruction or escape or (most importantly, for me) security. And i love the texture and the heft and the smell.

Brains: Brrraaaaiiiinnnnsssss. Yummy, yummy brains.... Seriously, though, i do always say that the brain is my favorite organ (my second favorite is the kidney, by the way). No other part of the body can equal the brain's complexity or beauty -- an interconnected microscopic forrest of tiny thought-trees! Not just the "seat of the soul", brains *are* the soul. Containing layers upon layers of intricacies -- systems, networks, molecules -- brains *happened* and we're just beginning to understand how they happened and what it means. (Not to mention, i've devoted 5 years of my life -- and counting -- to studying brains. So hell yeah they're important to me!)

Beach: Okay, another obvious one. I love the beach -- more specifically i love the ocean and the place where ocean meets land. I could spend hours combing through tide pools. Plus i love dunes and dune grasses and scrub. And then there's that beachy smell -- ocean saltiness and sweet sunscreen and yummy fried boardwalk treats... Hey, and wouldn't you know, it's getting to be beach season! Who's up for a trip to cape ann???

Blair: My high-school (officially Montgomery Blair HS). This isn't a "happy-thing-i-love important" so much as a "big-role-in-my-life important". It's a huge school (2400 students when i was there -- more now, it think) in an incredibly diverse neighborhood with pockets of real poverty. It also had 2 magnet programs that drew from the rest of the county. My program was amazing but my friends all went to other schools so I was lonely a lot of the time -- in fact, it was while at Blair that books became like security blankets to me. It's okay to sit and eat lunch by yourself if you have a book. But the academics were good. I worked harder at Blair than i have since -- in particular my sr year english and biology teachers really shaped how i view the world. I'm still not sure that choosing to go there was a good decision but i know i wouldn't be the same person if i hadn't.

Yes! Books are a security blanket for meals! That's a great way of putting it... :)

The book thing resonates with me too. :)

And beach! Yes! Love the beach! Let me know anytime you find yourself arranging a beach trip! Never been to Cape Ann (I usually drive to Ogunquit Maine - an hour and a half, about as long as it takes to get to Nantasket with traffic, but a nicer beach - although no carousel, so, hm) but any beach is good by me. :)
